PPP is for purchasing power parity and it means how much money would be needed to buy the same item in two different countries. GDP is the worth of all goods and services made in a country in a year. This means that Roman GDP (PPP) per capita was around 20 higher than the Byzantine one. Although GDP per capita is an important and widely used indicator of countries’ level of economic welfare, "consumption per capita" may be more useful for comparing the relative welfare of consumers across various countries. The difference in the Roman and Byzantine GDP (PPP) per capita is due to the authors operating with differing conversion rates for the subsistence level: 300 in the Roman case (2.1 x 300 633), 400 in the Byzantine one (1.7 x 400 680).
